Today’s NYT has a front page Business Day article titled, “Searching Big Data for “Digital Smoke Signals” talking about the potential and value of big data analytics in development. Large amounts of macro-level data can be aggregated and analyzed in real-time, for example, tracking pandemics, economic indicators, the financial and commodities markets, etc. Here’s a great example of the role of analytics and information technologies in development. Simultaneously it opens up opportunities for individuals interested in combining technology, analytical skills, and social justice.
